  4. Here's another nice "newbie" title that is a competent "first book" for
  5. a new user who finds he/she has full Internet access either at work or
  6. school.  I was amazed at how much useful information I found packed into
  7. 276 pages - and applicable to a wide range of users - DOS, Macs, Windows
  8. and Workstations!

  10. For example, Author Crumlish gives the reader survival skills in Elm, 
  11. Pine and UNIX mail, both Pico and vi editors and four popular newsreaders, 
  12. Tin, nn, rn and trn.  A special emphasis is placed on e-mail and related
  13. activities such as mailing lists, Net News, Archie-by-e-mail, ftp-by-e-mail
  14. and how tyy to find people on the net.  There's a bit of information on
  15. UNIX and a discussion of file transfer principles and theory.  Then there's
  16. material on FTP, finding files with Archie, Gopher and Telnet.  There's
  17. a great chapter on the WWW - probably the best 20 page indoctrination to 
  18. the most exciting and fastest growing Net component.

  20. Appendices include a list of Internet access providers, quick reference to
  21. "all them nasty UNIX commands" and a glossary of net jargon.

  23. The book is very well designed and illustrated - four color graphics on
  24. every page.  The tour guide cartoon character appears in a sidebar to the
  25. text with plain language commentary on the text - a novel approach!  In
  26. the introduction he states"...I assume you're a regular person.  You own 
  27. a computer or have access to one but its not your favorite toy.  You don't
  28. think like a geek and you don't want to know too much technical drivel,
  29. just enough to get going..."  This pretty well sums up my conclusions too.
